What is Perfect Five?
Perfect Five is the NBA simulation mode on Draft Sim. Your goal is simple: assemble the greatest five-player roster in basketball history and prove it on the court. You start by choosing a captain — the cornerstone of your lineup — and then pick four more legends to round out the squad.
Every player in the pool is powered by their real career statistics: points per game (PPG), rebounds per game (RPG), and assists per game (APG), plus defensive numbers like steals and blocks. The captain you choose carries extra weight in close games and clutch playoff moments.
Once your five are locked in, the simulation engine runs a full 82-game regular season, tracking wins, losses, and individual performances throughout. If your team makes the cut, you advance to the playoffs and fight through bracket rounds until a champion is decided.
How the Simulation Works
The engine starts with each player's career averages as the statistical baseline. Those averages are then adjusted by a position synergy model that rewards balanced rosters — a lineup with a true point guard distributing to shooters and a dominant big man, for example, will outperform five players of the same position drafted together.
On top of the synergy layer, the engine applies controlled randomness to replicate the natural variability of an NBA season. A great team might lose to a hot-shooting opponent on a given night, just as they would in reality. Over 82 games the cream rises to the top, but any single game can surprise you.
Playoff rounds use a best-of-seven format. Momentum carries over — teams that finish the regular season on a hot streak get a slight edge entering the postseason. The further you advance, the tighter the competition gets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are players simulated at their career peak or using full-career averages?
The simulation uses each player's full-career averages rather than a single peak season. This means a player who posted elite numbers across a long career will generally rate very highly, while a player with one or two exceptional seasons surrounded by average ones will rate slightly lower.
Can I mix players from different eras?
Absolutely — that's the whole point. You can pair a 1960s legend with a 2010s superstar. The engine normalises statistics to a common scale so era differences don't create an unfair advantage for players from a higher-scoring era.
How are playoffs decided?
The top eight teams in the simulated standings qualify for the playoffs. Matchups are seeded, and each series is played out game by game with results influenced by team strength, home-court advantage, and the randomness factor built into the engine.
Does the captain pick really matter?
Yes. Your captain receives a leadership bonus that amplifies their contribution in high-leverage situations — late-game clutch moments and playoff games in particular. Choosing a player known for their playoff pedigree as captain can make a real difference to your tournament run.
Why didn't my all-star lineup win the championship?
Upsets happen in real basketball and they happen here too. The randomness layer ensures no outcome is guaranteed, which keeps every simulation fresh and replayable. Try a different captain or swap one player and see how the season changes.
Are the stats official or approximate?
The statistics are drawn from historical career data and are used for entertainment purposes. They are close approximations of official records but may not match official league databases exactly.
